Arab Program for Human Rights Activists

The Arab Program for Human Rights Activists concluded its campaign “Darfur before its too late,” that lasted from August 2007 till August 2008, by declaring the launching of The Arab Coalition for Darfur through the regional workshop that took place in Flamingo Hotel, Cairo last May. 

Agreement had been reached to form a Secretariat for the coalition made up from 8 Arab organizations, the Arab Program being one of them; in addition to the organization of a number of activities, chief amongst them a press conference to launch the Arab Coalition at the margin of the meetings of the foreign ministers of Islamic countries in Kampala, Uganda last June.  Moreover, a number of training workshops were held for journalists, people working in the media, and legal experts at the local level to form a wide front of activists and interest groups to support the victims of Darfur and to work to alleviate the suffering of the civilians in that region. 

The coalition also endeavored to reaffirm the necessity to adhere to the articles of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights International Law in the beleaguered Province.  All these efforts were coupled with the media campaign that was led by the Arab Program through signs, posters and informational brochures that provided information that increased awareness about the problem of Darfur as well as legal aspects pertaining to it.

Within this framework and in collaboration with the Arab Coalition for Darfur, the Program sums up its campaign “Darfur before it is too late” with the organization of a regional training workshop entitle, “Darfur in the Memory of Arab Media.”  The workshop will take place in Green Sidr Village (Ras Sidr) during the period of 24-26 August, 2008.

Twenty participants, working in different fields of journalism and media, will participate in this regional workshop, from inside and outside Egypt.  The workshop will focus on a number of important aspects, such as: an introduction about the different dimensions of the crisis of Darfur, an introduction about the work of the International Criminal Court and its latest request concerning Sudan and the Sudanese President, cultural and racial diversity in Darfur and their effect on the crisis, Egyptian and Arab Media vision of the crisis, an the activation of the Arab Coalition for Darfur.  A roundtable discussion will also be held to develop a media and journalistic vision about the crisis.

It is worth mentioning that the regional training workshop will be a conclusion of a number of fruitful activities that have been taking place for the past year to save the civilian victims of Darfur.  The Arab Program and the organizations collaborating with it believe that any positive change in the status of human rights and the respect of the clauses of the International Humanitarian Law pertaining to the protection of civilians in times of armed struggle will not take place except through initiatives taken by civil society organizations.

استمراراً لجهود البرنامج العربي المتعددة وفي إطار حملته "دارفور قبل فوات الآوان" أغسطس2007 : أغسطس 2008، وبالإعلان عن تشكيل التحالف العربي من أجل دارفور من خلال الورشة الإقليمية التي عقدت في فندق فلامنكو بالقاهرة في شهر مايو الماضي والتوافق علي تشكيل سكرتارية للتحالف تضم ثماني مؤسسات عربية من بينها البرنامج العربي، ثم تنظيم عدد من الأنشطة من بينها مؤتمر صحفي لتدشين التحالف العربي علي هامش إجتماعات وزراء خارجية الدول الإسلامية في كمبالا بأوغندا في شهر يونيو الماضي، فضلا عن عدد من الدورات التدريبية للصحفيين والإعلاميين والقانونيين علي المستوي المحلي لتشكيل جبهة واسعة من النشطاء والمعنيين لمناصرة ضحايا دارفور والعمل علي رفع المعاناة عن المدنيين وإقرار العمل بقواعد القانون الدولي الإنساني والقانون الدولي لحقوق الإنسان في هذا الإقليم المنكوب بالإضافة إلي الحملة الإعلامية التي قادها البرنامج من خلال المعلقات والملصقات والنشرات التوعوية والتعريفية والقانونية.

          وفي هذا الإطار وبالتعاون مع التحالف العربي من أجل دارفور يختتم البرنامج حملته "دارفور قبل فوات الآوان" بتنظيم الدورة التدريبية الإقليمية "دارفور في ذاكرة الإعلام العربي" وذلك بقرية (جرين سدر) برأس سدر في الفترة من 24 – 26 أغسطس الجاري.

          ولا يعني انتهاء الحملة توقف أنشطة البرنامج العربي لمناصرة ودعم مواطني إقليم دارفور؛ فالبرنامج صمم عدداً من الأنشطة والفاعليات والحملات الإعلامية والقانونية للعمل على هذا الملف الشائك لحين التوصل إلى حلول ناجعة وحماية فعالة لمواطني دارفور.

          هذا ويشارك في الدورة التدريبية الإقليمية عشرون متدرباً من داخل مصر وخارجها ما بين صحفيين وإعلاميين،وتتضمن الدورة عدد من المحاور الهامة مثل:مقدمة حول أبعاد الأزمة في دارفور، تعريف بالمحكمة الجنائية الدولية، وطلب المحكمة الأخير بشأن السودان والرئيس السوداني، التنوع الثقافي والعرقي في دارفور وآثاره على الأزمة، ورؤية الإعلام المصري والعربي لأبعاد الأزمة، وكذلك تفعيل التحالف العربي من أجل دارفور، مائدة مستدير لبلورة رؤية إعلامية وصحفية حول الأزمة.

          وجدير بالذكر أن الدورة التدريبية الإقليمية تأتي كتتويج لأنشطة متعددة استمرت لمدة عام للعمل  من أجل انقاذ ضحايا دارفور من المدنيين إيمانا من البرنامج العربي والمتعاونين معه بأن أي تغيير ايجابي في حالة حقوق الإنسان أو أحترام القواعد الواردة بالقانون الدولي الإنساني فيما يخص حماية المدنيين في زمن النزاعات المسلحة لن يتأتي إلا من خلال مبادرات مؤسسات المجتمع المدني.
