Soldiers open fire in war-torn Darfur

Khartoum - Angry Sudanese border guards killed one civilian and injured three others in a market on Sunday after opening fire indiscriminately in war-torn Darfur's largest town, the local governor said.

Members of a notorious border guard unit, drawn from local Arab tribes, protested for about two hours at the local army headquarters in Al-Fasher and then drove downtown, firing into the air, furious about delayed wages.

Darfur’s shadow

Whether speaking to a group of young softball players or plying her teammates with literature, Jessica Mendoza, a 27-year old outfielder on the United States Olympic softball team, does not hesitate to speak her mind about the killings in Darfur.

But Mendoza stops short of publicly condemning China, which has close ties to the government of Sudan, because she says it is impolite to criticise her Olympic hosts and because one of her sponsors, Nike, has a major marketing presence in China.

Sudanese President invited to UN council summit

Sudan's President Omar Hassan el-Bashir has received an invitation to attend a summit meeting of the UN Security Council in New York later this month, Sudan's UN envoy said yesterday.

Several Western diplomats said the invitation to el-Bashir, who they said has been dragging his feet in agreeing to the full deployment of 26,000 UN-African Union peacekeepers in Sudan's war-wracked Darfur region, came as a surprise to them.
