Headline: Paris and London Call for Total Ceasefire in Darfur

Paris and London issued a call to Sudanese government and Darfur rebel groups to:

  • Observe a total ceasefire
  • Focus on political efforts to resolve the crisis in the region
  • Attend Arusha meeting which is hosted by United Nations and African Union envoys. Failure to attend shows disregard for peace efforts
  • Both countries indicated they have lots of work to do to secure approval for hybrid force deployment in Darfur.

Headline: UN Human Rights Commission Concerned about Human Rights Violations

United Nations human rights commission called on Sudan to:

  • Try anyone who is responsible for war crimes in Darfur
  • Ensure no assistance to militias involved in ethnic cleansing in Darfur
  • Conduct independent investigation into human rights violations

It also expressed:

  • Concern over human rights violations, which include:
  • Killings
  • Rape
  • Forced displacement

Meanwhile, China defended its position regarding Darfur and urged patience

Headline: Sudan Accused Washington of Smuggling Weapons into Darfur

Sudanese Minister of the Interior Al Zubair Bashir Taha accused the United States of blackmail when it:

  • Demanded it recognizes Israel in exchange for dropping issue of Darfur
  • Demanded ending economic cooperation with China

He also accused the United States of:

  • Smuggling weapons to Darfur region
  • Supporting rebel groups
  • Killing thousands of innocent people in Darfur because of its irresponsible support of rebel groups

In addition, he accused Prime Minister Brown of blindly following the United States and warned President Sarkozy of following the British example.

British envoy to the United Nations said compromise over draft resolution to be almost finished

  • French envoy said consultations aimed to gain wide support
  • Unnamed diplomatic source indicated resolution to be adopted after Prime Minister Brown delivers a speech at UN Security Council on Tuesday
  • Despite the adjustment, chapter seven still a sticky point

Meanwhile, UN human rights commission called on Sudanese government to end Darfur “violations” and urged it to:

  • Try those responsible for war crimes in Darfur
  • Ensure no assistance to militias involved in ethnic cleansing in Darfur
  • Conduct independent investigation into human rights violations

African Union condemned threats of retaliation issued by Darfur rebels in case their benefits were reduced.

British envoy to the United Nations said compromise over draft resolution to be almost finished

Hybrid force will replace the poorly-equipped and under-funded African Union troops, which failed to prevent civil war in Darfur. High-ranking Sudan People’s Liberation Movement accused Khartoum government of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Darfur. And at the same time, the African Union condemned threats issued by Darfur rebels in case their benefits were reduced.

Pa’gan Amum, Sudan People’s Liberation Movemnt accused Khartoum government of “war crimes” in Darfur including:

He also criticized President Al Bashir and accused the government of “direct responsibility for forced displacement of millions in Darfur.” Meanwhile, diplomats reported progress being made at the UN Security Council:

Headline: Darfur Rebel Groups Prepare for Arusha in Libya

Sudanese president sent out his advisors to 15 African nations to update them on the situation in Darfur and the status of negotiations with the international community and national reconciliation. At the same time, Darfur rebel groups met in Libya:

  • To prepare for Arusha meeting
  • To finalize the meeting’s agenda

Justice and Equality Movement announced that finding a political solution to the conflict is inevitable and the best hope for Darfur and the whole country.

Headline: Mousa and Abu Al Ghaid Discuss with Adada Darfur’s Latest Developments

Amru Mousa, head of Arab League, told journalists that discussions with Rudolph Adada, head of hybrid force included:

  • Coordination between the African Union, the Arab League, and the United Nations
  • Recognition that Sudanese government is primary responsible for Darfur region
  • Praise for the Sudanese government’s cooperation with the African Union and the United Nations

At the same time, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Abu Al Ghaid said his talks with Adada touched upon:

  • United Nations Security Council discussions regarding Darfur hybrid force
  • Situation in Darfur
  • Hybrid force role in Darfur

The minister offered Egypt’s support for Adada’s mission and insisted that the hybrid force must keep its African identity and leadership.
