Headline: Khartoum Hopes US to Be Serious about Threats against Rebels, and UN Human Rights Report Exposes Serious Violations

  • UN report by seven independent rights experts indicated that serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law by all sides in the Darfur conflict continue to be reported
  • The group said that while the government implemented some of the short-term recommendations, there was no evidence so far that a clear impact on the ground could be identified
  • The report added that the government cannot use excuses such as “it did not have enough time or human or financial resources” to justify its inability to combat human rights violations in Darfur
  • The report called on the Sudanese government to arrest and bring to justice anyone condemned of human rights violations in Darfur
  • Despite the criticism, Sudan’s representative at UN Human Rights Council described the repot as “very constructive”
  • And in Khartoum, minister of defense stressed the need for ceasefire at the beginning of Libya peace talks
  • The minister was optimistic that Western countries would carry out their threats against any groups that opposed peace

Headline: UN Report: Human Rights in Darfur Did not Improve

  • A group of experts said that human rights condition in Darfur did not see any improvement in the past few months despite Sudanese government and United Nations’ effort
  • The group said that while the government implemented some of the short-term recommendations, there was no evidence so far that a clear impact on the ground could be identified
  • The group also praised the government’s cooperation in the writing of the report
  • Oxfam indicated that it might withdraw from Darfur if violence continued
  • The organization said that Darfur crisis took funds away from other regions of Sudan which are in as much need for development projects
  • The only reason the organization did not leave, it said, is due to the large number of people in Darfur who came to rely on its humanitarian aid work

  • 5 people killed and 5 wounded in attack on police station by two Darfur rebel groups
  • Minister of defense assailed Abdul Wahid Nour for refusing to attend Darfur peace negotiations in Libya
  • The minister charged that Nour does not want peace nor does he represent Darfur refugees or even his own tribe
  • The minister also reiterated his country’s commitment to ceasefire at the start of the peace talks in Libya
  • The minister was optimistic that Western countries would carry out their threats against any groups that opposed peace
  • South Darfur government was able to stem out a new round of violence between Al Abbala and Torjam tribes.  Last month’s violence between the two tribes led to the killing of more than 300 people on both sides

  • Khartoum government criticized UN report by international humanitarian experts who accused all parties in Darfur of “continuing to commit humanitarian and human rights violations:
  • The group said that while the government implemented some of the short-term recommendations, there was no evidence so far that a clear impact on the ground could be identified
  • The report added that the government cannot use excuses such as “it did not have enough time or human or financial resources” to justify its inability to combat human rights violations in Darfur
  • Meanwhile, AU spokesperson Nouredine Al Mazni said the AU and UN experts were working on common strategy for Darfur hybrid force deployment
  • Hybrid force leader, General Martin Luther, indicated that disarming warring factions to be the only way to end the crisis.
