Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

September 25, 2023

Los Angeles Times: Some see a time bomb ticking in Darfur camps. This overcrowded Darfur displacement camp is preparing for battle. Men have dug trenches and dragged tree trunks across dirt roads. Young lookouts, some armed with sticks and axes, scan the horizon for invaders. Even aid workers and United Nations peacekeepers are increasingly wary of Kalma's besieged and, at times, belligerent population. Since a deadly standoff a month ago in which Sudanese government troops killed 31 people here, including 17 women and children, the sprawling camp has been on the brink of eruption.

Reuters: U.N. Council says will keep peacekeepers in Chad. The U.N. Security Council extended the mandate of a peacekeeping force in eastern Chad and Central African Republic on Wednesday and said it would keep international peacekeepers there beyond the March 2009 expiration of the force's mandate. The council decided a year ago to deploy a European Union peacekeeping force in the two countries, as well as a U.N. mission, to train and support Chadian police to guard U.N.-run refugee camps.

Reuters: UN rights body renews job of Sudan investigator. The United Nations Human Rights Council on Wednesday renewed the mandate of its specialist on the Sudan for six months despite charges from Khartoum that she was working with the West to besmirch the country's image. Diplomats said the consensus decision among the body's 47 members was part of a compromise between mainly European states and Islamic and African nations that softened EU-proposed criticism of the Sudanese government's rights record.
