Reuters: Sudan dismisses Bashir indictment push. Sudan's vice president on Thursday dismissed a possible war crimes indictment of the largest African country's president as a nefarious plan that is intended to derail the fragile Darfur peace process. "The arrest request targeting the country's leader, symbol of its sovereignty and dignity, is a failed attempt at political and moral assassination and derailing the peace process," Ali Osman Mohamed Taha told the U.N. General Assembly.

Agence France-Presse: Sudanese genocide case should proceed: prosecutor. International Criminal Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo is resisting attempts by European and African powers to back off a genocide case against Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir. Moreno-Ocampo, at the United Nations General Assembly to press his message, told AFP that politics and the mission of the ICC should not mix.

Reuters: INTERVIEW-ICC to query case of Sudan's Bashir next week. Judges at the International Criminal Court have summoned the chief prosecutor for a first hearing next week on his request to charge Sudan's president with genocide in Darfur, the prosecutor said. It is unclear when the judges will make a decision on Moreno-Ocampo's application, which he said was the ICC's biggest and most complex case to date. However, they invited him to an initial hearing to explain the case next Wednesday.

Reuters: At least 69 children dead in Sudan food crisis-UN. At least 69 children have died from malnutrition and sickness after floods washed away crops in isolated villages in southeast Sudan in recent weeks, U.N. agencies said on Thursday. Blocked roads and a lack of air transport are preventing the supply of emergency rations to parts of the region, the agencies added.
