Reuters: U.S. Senator Kerry Arrives In Sudan For Three Day Visit. U.S. senator and former presidential candidate John Kerry arrived in Sudan Wednesday for a three-day visit as the diplomatic detente between Washington and Khartoum shows further signs of a thaw. Kerry, chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will lead a congressional delegation to Sudan's Darfur region and hold talks with senior members of the Sudanese government. "Now it is my opportunity representing the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate to be here to engage on humanitarian issues and obviously issues pertaining to the conflict," Kerry told reporters after landing. "We're all very hopeful that we can make progress on these issues."

Wilmette Life (Ill.): Students to rally for Darfur. High school students are urging the U.S. government to help stop the genocide in Sudan and they'll publicize that message Sunday at a rally in Chicago. "We have over 50 high schools involved," said Eliana Fisher, 15, of Wilmette. Armed conflict has killed and displaced hundreds of thousands of people in the African nation of Sudan, according to United Nations reports. An international criminal court has charged Sudan President Omar Hassan al-Bashir with war crimes. Young activists took their first step more than a year ago by organizing a network of concerned student groups in the Chicago area, which became known as Youth United for Darfur. They recently decided to take their cause out of the classroom and put it on a national stage. They will hold a rally at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Federal Center plaza in downtown Chicago.

Dallas Morning News: Art for Darfur to host fundraiser at SMU on Saturday. Art for Darfur will host its third auction Saturday on the SMU campus to raise funds and awareness for a region in western Sudan that has been ravaged by war. The organization, created in 2006 by SMU students, has grown to incorporate Dallas-area activists, faith communities, educational institutions and non-profit groups that share the same vision of connecting local residents with Darfur through art. Exhibit Darfur, a national traveling art show, will also be on display and feature photographs by six artists including Mia Farrow. Participants will also have the opportunity to write letters and petition their elected officials on U.S. legislation and actions in Darfur.
