Agence France-Press: 'Smart sanctions' for Sudan could help south: US envoy. Sanctions on Sudan should be partially lifted to improve the humanitarian situation, especially in the troubled south, the US special envoy to Sudan said on Thursday. Retired general Scott Gration said specific restrictions should be lifted to help develop the region, still recovering after the end of a 22-year long civil war.

Bloomberg: Darfur's Rebels Should Unite Ahead of Peace Talks, U.S. Says. Rebel movements in Sudan's troubled Darfur region should unite ahead of talks with the government to promote a single message, U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration, said.

Reuters: WFP to start air drops in southern Sudan. The United Nations' food agency will start air drops of food over parts of southern Sudan that could be in a "pre-famine" stage, it said on Thursday. The World Food Programme (WFP) aims to provide 22,000 tonnes of food to 300,000 additional people facing severe food shortages by year-end, half of it by air drops, its top official in Sudan, Kenro Oshidari, said.  In all, 1.3 million people in southern Sudan now need food assistance, mainly subsistence farmers suffering from a lack of rain, high food prices and low prices for their cattle.
