International Herald Tribune: Obama names retired general as Sudan envoy. President Barack Obama on Wednesday appointed a close adviser and retired general to be his special envoy to Sudan as the administration ratcheted up pressure against the government in Khartoum for expelling humanitarian relief organizations from the ravaged region of Darfur, administration officials said. The White House said that Mr. Obama had named Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration, a Swahili-speaking retired air force officer who grew up in Africa as the son of missionaries, to the post. He will be taking on one of the most delicate diplomatic missions of the Obama presidency. Jerry Fowler, president of the Save Darfur Coalition, an umbrella organization, said Wednesday that his reaction was "in general, very favorable." "I think that his experience, gravitas and close relationship with President Obama will contribute to his effectiveness," he said. "What we'll want to make sure of is that he has the mandate and authority to drive U.S. policy on Sudan." After a period of uncertainty over administration action in Sudan, Mr. Fowler added, "In the last few days, I've been heartened by an increasing sense of urgency."
