Reuters: Darfur rebels pull out of key settlements. Darfur rebels said on Thursday they had pulled out of two key settlements close to the border with Chad after coming under heavy bombardment from Sudanese government forces. The insurgent Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) told Reuters it had withdrawn from Kornoi and Umm Baru, both settlements in North Darfur it said it seized from state troops earlier this month. JEM's announcement marked a reversal in the rebel force's recent push into the remote region, an advance that coincided with a deterioration of relations between the governments of Sudan and Chad, which Khartoum says supports JEM. The development also came as faltering negotiations between Sudan's government and JEM resumed in Qatar. The discussions have so far not evolved into full peace talks.

Agence France-Presse: Darfur rebels say plan to release 60 govt troops. Darfur's most active rebel group said on Thursday it intends to free 60 Sudanese troops as a "sign of goodwill" ahead of Qatari-brokered peace talks with Sudan's government. JEM had agreed early this month to resume talks with Khartoum to achieve lasting peace in Sudan's western Darfur region. He charged that the government is holding hundreds of JEM members but declined to say how many government prisoners it had captured. AFP has learnt that talks are underway in Doha between the Qatari brokers, international representatives and JEM. However, negotiations between JEM and the Sudanese government have yet to begin.
