Newshour: U.S. Shifts Sudan Policy Towards Engagement.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a new strategy for Sudan this week, forgoing the president's campaign promise of isolating the country's leadership and committing to greater engagement with the Sudanese government to end genocide and war in Darfur. The new plan places a greater emphasis on incentives to encourage cooperation than the previous Bush administration policy, but President Barack Obama was quick to stress that there will be severe punishments if the government does not comply.

BBC News: Witness: Kidnapped in Darfur.  Ugandan aid worker Hilda Kawuki, 42, tells the BBC of her surprise at being released from her three-month kidnap ordeal in Sudan's Darfur region. She and her Irish colleague Sharon Commins, who worked for the charity Goal, were seized by gunmen in Kutum. Sudan's government has stressed that "no ransom was paid" for their release.

The following op-ed was in the Wall Street Journal by John Prendergast: Will Obama Finally Pay Attention to Sudan?.For the past seven months, U.S. diplomacy toward Sudan has veered dangerously in the direction of appeasing Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP). Since taking power in a 1989 coup, the NCP has engaged in a systematic assault on the Sudanese people. The use of starvation as a weapon in Southern Sudan and the genocide in Darfur have killed nearly two and a half million people. Omar al-Bashir, the country's president, is the first sitting head of state indicted by the International Criminal Court. Under his rule, the body count continues to climb.

Agence France-Presse: Sudan women face 20 lashes for 'indecent' clothes.A Sudanese court on Thursday sentenced two women to 20 lashes for dressing "indecently," an AFP reporter said. The two women, who have not been identified, were arrested in Khartoum in July along with journalist-turned-activist Lubna Ahmed Hussein who spent a day in jail after refusing to pay a fine for wearing "indecent trousers."
