Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Reuters: South Sudan candidate withdraws from election. South Sudan's leading party said on Wednesday it was withdrawing its candidate for the presidency in next month's election. "We decided that Yasir (Arman) should end his campaign for the presidency of the republic," the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) vice-chairman Riek Machar told reporters. Machar cited the conflict in Darfur and electoral irregularities, adding the party would also boycott all levels of elections in Darfur.

AFP: US, Britain, Norway urge 'credible' Sudan vote. The United States, Britain and Norway on Wednesday jointly urged all sides in Sudan to work for credible elections, voicing concern about impediments to the polls slated to begin April 11. "We urge all parties in Sudan to work urgently to ensure that elections can proceed peacefully and credibly in April," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Store said in a joint statement.

AFP: US envoy in Sudan in a bid to rescue polls. The US special envoy for Sudan  met opposition leaders in Khartoum on Thursday in a bid to save April's elections, threatened by the pullout of President Omar al-Beshir's main challenger and an opposition boycott. The envoy, who made no comment to reporters after his initial contacts, was expected to hold marathon negotiations in the Sudanese capital on the elections and on the fate of the war-torn region of Darfur in western Sudan.

Sudan Tribune: Darfur peace deal "unlikely" to be signed before election - mediator. Stakeholders in Darfur conflict may not be able to sign a peace deal before the general election in Sudan scheduled for April 11, said Djibril Bassole, the Joint Chief Mediator today.

Idaho Statesman: Activists help Boise care about Darfur genocide. Even they say so: They are an unlikely trio. A.J. Fay is 19, a Meridian High School graduate. Marcia Prasch is a stay-at-home mom with three children, including twins. Marilyn Griep is 57 years old with a background as a social worker. What they have in common is a concern about the genocide in Darfur. Together, they are the Idaho Darfur Coalition. "We are three people who've not lived in Darfur," Prasch says. "We've become pretty entwined with local Darfuri people. They keep us motivated."
