Reuters Africa: Man throws shoe at Sudanese president: witnesses. A man threw his shoe at Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in a public conference in the capital on Monday, a particularly insulting action in Arab culture, eye witnesses said. They said the unidentified man was swiftly detained by about 10 presidential guards although the projectile missed Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in the western Darfur region. It was not immediately clear why the man hurled his shoe.

Sudan Tribune: Human Rights Watch calls for more election observers in Sudan. The New York-based Human Rights Watch today issued a paper saying that violations of political and civil rights by Sudanese security forces are undermining the prospects of a free and fair election in April 2010. The rights group called for more international elections observers as one way to address these concerns.

Sudan Tribune: UN chief urges Sudanese to discuss post-referendum arrangements. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon urged the Sudanese parties of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) to address the post referendum arrangements to shun war.

Sudan Tribune: New head of Darfur hybrid mission arrives in Sudan. The new head of the hybrid mission and peacekeeping force in Darfur arrived to the Sudanese capital on Friday to assume his duties. The former Nigerian foreign minister, Ibrahim Gambari who served recently as top United Nations envoy for Myanmar, has been appointed by UN Secretary General and AU AU Chairperson last December as Joint Special Representative and head of the joint African Union-UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID), effective 1 January 2010.
