Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

March 3, 2023

Bloomberg News: U.S. 'Extremely Concerned' by Reported Sudan Government Attacks.  The U.S. is "extremely concerned" about reports that Sudanese government forces have launched attacks on the Sudan Liberation Army/Abdel Wahid in Darfur's Jebel Marra region.  The attacks have reportedly caused "significant civilian Casualties," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in an e-mailed statement that urged Sudan to halt the violence and let United Nations and African Union peacekeepers into the area.

Reuters: Darfur rebels threaten to quit peace talks.  Darfur's strongest rebel group threatened on Wednesday to walk out of new peace talks with Sudan's government if Khartoum pushed on with plans to sign agreements with other insurgents.  JEM leader Khalil Ibrahim told Reuters that Khartoum's plans to sign a similar deal with a rebel umbrella group, the Liberation and Justice Movement, would undermine what he saw as JEM's position as the sole negotiator for Darfur's rebels.

Reuters: At least 30 killed in south Sudan cattle raids.  At least 30 people were killed in cattle-rustling raids and revenge attacks between rival clans in Sudan's oil-producing south, officials said on Tuesday. Gunmen from the Dinka tribe's Atuot and Ciek clans clashed in south Sudan's remote Lakes State over the weekend. Traditional conflicts, often fought over cattle, have intensified amid a flood of weapons left over from Sudan's north-south civil war that ended in a faltering 2005 peace deal.

Agence France-Presse: Rival south Sudan parties agree on election code.  All south's Sudan's political parties signed an election code of conduct late on Tuesday, committing themselves to ensure upcoming polls in April are free and fair. A total of 17 rival parties came together to hammer out the agreement in a two-day meeting convened by the African Union ahead of the polls due next month, Sudan's first multi-party elections in 24 years.
