Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

March 16, 2023

Associated Press: Sudan to continue peace talks with Darfur rebels.  Sudan will continue peace talks with the most powerful Darfur rebel group beyond Monday's deadline for an agreement.

Reuters: Sudan summons two papers for insulting Bashir. Sudanese authorities have summoned editors from two papers, accusing them of insulting President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who is running for re-election in April's first multi-party polls in 24 years, the publications said on Monday. Editors from the opposition Ajras al-Huriya and al-Rai al-Shaab newspapers were both questioned by the National Press Council, which accused them of breaking the law and insulting the president, which could carry a penalty of a temporary closure -- financially crippling for papers heavily dependent on corporate advertising for revenue.

Arab News: OIC seeks to raise $2 billion for Darfur.  The 57-nation Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) will organize an international donors' conference for Darfur in Cairo on March 21, it was announced here on Sunday.  The OIC said the conference aims at mobilizing donations and investments for a number of sectors, including water, health and education. The conference will be held under the co-chairmanship of Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

The following blog is by Nicholas D. Kristof in the New York Times: A Play About Darfur. My previous research assistant, Winter Miller, is and was a playwright.  She had done a fabulous job supporting my work, and she became increasingly interested in writing a play about Darfur.  And, sure enough, Winter turned it into a terrific drama. It's called In Darfur, and it explores questions of journalistic ethics, particularly the tradeoffs between a reporter's obligation to cover a larger story and get word out, versus the obligation to the particular individual who may be placed at risk by that story.
