Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

March 29, 2023

Reuters: Darfur rebels say shot down Sudan helicopters. Darfur rebels said on Sunday they had shot down two Sudanese army helicopters in the latest reports of fighting that have marred faltering peace talks between Khartoum and other insurgents. Sudan's army said two if its helicopters crashed after developing technical problems, but denied there was any attack.

AFP: West should encourage Sudan unity: opposition leader. The United States and EU should back Sudanese unity rather than prepare for a secession of the south that would breed "fanaticism," political and religious leader Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani said on Saturday in a rare interview.

Reuters: Sudan's Mahdi says government has destroyed country. Sudan's ousted prime minister accused the government on Saturday of destroying the country and forcing the separation of the south as he took his campaign for re-election to one of his traditional heartlands. Sadeq al-Mahdi, a descendant of the self-proclaimed Mahdi who fought the British in the 19th century, was overthrown by Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in 1989. Mahdi, Sudan's last elected leader, is one of the main presidential candidates in elections, due to start on April 11, that have been marred by delays and opposition charges of fraud.

Daily Nation: ICC warrant a pain in the neck for Bashir. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir seems to have enjoyed his year as fugitive head of state. Recent boasts and threats would indicate that. A little humility might help. President Bashir remains popular in the North. It's a different matter in the South. Come next January, the region will hold a referendum on secession or unity with Sudan. Results would provide a better measure of the president's popularity.
