Global Day for Darfur - GHANA

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) organized a seminar in collaboration with the Forum on African Affairs, a student group of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana.

A documentary on the situation in Darfur was shown with a post-screening presentation and discussion. The presentation by Prof. Kwame Karkari, Executive Director of MFWA, was entitled 'The Responsibility of Intellectuals in the Search for Peace in Darfur' and discussed the different dimensions of the crisis and the many reasons why humanitarian issues arising out of the conflict must be confronted by intellectuals.

The following key points were raised:

* There is the need to recongize the situation as it really is: genocide. This will pave the way for issues to be addressed properly.

* African intellectuals must take an interest in the happenings in the Darfur region as this would facilitate a proper contextualization of the crisis that results in the general public also understanding the conflict.

* It is necessary also for students and youth to be involved in some kind of a movement for peace in Darfur. This can be done if students take an interest in the Darfur crisis and undertake activities in support of AU and UN interventions.

* The intellectual community must constantly remind the world that the people of the Darfur region have the right to live and to enjoy peace.

* The fact that the situation doesn't seem to be improving is an indication that more needs to be done to expose the perpetrators of atrocities.

* The international community, specifically, countries like China, Russia and others that are providing military assistance to the Sudan government are actually prolonging the atrocities.

A joint statement was issued by MFWA and the Forum on African Affairs and widely distributed to local and regional media. Read the statement here.

The presentation and discussion was followed by a cocktail reception.

The event was attended by political science students, academics, lecturers and other university community members.
