  • Ban Ki-Moon said that Al Bashir promised to respect ceasefire including not attacking rebel positions in the troubled region of Darfur
  • He also said that Al Bashir agreed to release Sulaiman Jamous who is under virtual arrest at a UN hospital in south west Sudan
  • Ki-Moon said the UN will transport Jamous to Kenya for treatment
  • He added that President Al Bashir was committed to UN Security Council resolution 1769, which mandates the deployment of AU-UN hybrid force of 26,000 troops in Darfur
  • The secretary general said that President Al Bashir and his first deputy Silva Kiir accepted the nomination of Pakistani diplomat Ashraf Qadhi to replace Jan Pronk who was expelled from Sudan last October.

  • Sudanese government to hold conference on Darfur devoted to economic development by the end of October and it wants strong Arab presence including governments, humanitarian groups, and investment groups
  • Arab ambassadors in Sudan were pleased with the request and started working with League of Arab Nations to coordinate Arab countries’ participation level and ways to ensure the conference’s success
  • Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Harun, said the Sudanese government wants a visible Arab role in the upcoming conference and a strong Arab presence on the ground in Darfur to create a balance in humanitarian efforts there
  • He added that the main goal of the conference is to improve the humanitarian conditions in Darfur, including providing adequate shelter, building schools, and hospitals

  • The secretary general said that his meeting with Omar Al Bashir will focus on achieving peace in Darfur and all of Sudan, in addition to discussing plans for smooth deployment of hybrid force and full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1769
  • Sulaiman Jamous praised the president’s decision and promised to push for a common negotiating strategy by Darfur rebel groups
  • Justice and Equality Movement urged the secretary general to pressure the Sudanese government to stop the air raids in Darfur and to allow humanitarian groups to work in all of Darfur not just in areas under government control
