  • British Minister of African Affairs Mark Brown predicted that Darfur hybrid force would be tested by groups such as the Janjaweed militia but was confident the force will not hesitate to defend itself
  • Meanwhile, in an unprecedented move, the Chinese military showed foreign journalists the capabilities of 315 engineers who will be deployed to Darfur early October ahead of the AU–UN hybrid force of 26,000 troops

Headline: Darfur Rebels Call for General Meeting Ahead of Libya Peace Talks

  • Justice and Equality Leader, Khalil Ibrahim, called for a meeting of rebel representatives, supporters, and displaced families to discuss their demands and what they want to accomplish from the peace talks in Libya
  • Khalil Ibrahim expected over 2.000 participants to attend the meeting which will be held in an area under rebel control just two days before the Libya peace talks
  • President Al Bashir and the United Nations issued an announcement in which they agreed to hold peace talks in Libya on October 27, to end all military action in Darfur, and cooperate with Darfur hybrid force

  • Gordon Brown pledged to provide technical assistance to Darfur peacekeeping force and threatened Khartoum government with new sanctions if it did not cooperated with the international community to resolve the crisis there
  • Prime Minister Brown described Darfur crisis as “one of the great tragedies of our time”
  • Meanwhile, human rights organizations were preparing to hold rallies during “global day for Darfur” in about 30 countries including Britain
  • Britain said it will not send troops to Darfur, and many experts interpreted Brown’s offer of technical assistance to mean transporting Darfur troops
  • The prime minister insisted that ceasefire and resolving the conflict peacefully to be necessary in order for Britain to participate in rebuilding Darfur

  • On Global Day for Darfur, hundreds of people rallied in London to demand the protection of Darfur residents. The demonstrators, who carried signs that said “don’t look away” and “protect Darfur,” marched from the Sudanese embassy to 10 Downing Street
  • Gordon Brown pledged to provide technical assistance to Darfur peacekeeping force and threatened Khartoum government with new sanctions if it did not cooperated with the international community to resolve the crisis there
  • In Paris, about 40 Amnesty International Activists rallied near the Eiffel Tower and urged the international community not “to look away.”  The organizers said that similar rallies were organized in other parts of the world including the United States, Mali, Canada, and Japan

  • United States welcomed the release of rebel leader Sulaiman Al Jamous to seek medical treatment outside Sudan
